The Upbeat Beatles Diary - April / May 2005Well, well, well. The Upbeat Beatles are certainly 'Big in Algeria' now and, following the success of our sell-out show at the Ibn Khaldoun Concert Hall in Algiers last month, we're set for a return trip in July! We had no idea what to expect, but were really touched by the warm reception we received from everybody in Algiers. We would especially like to thank Karim and Omar at Organic Music for co-ordinating the whole trip, everybody at the hotel and the venue and, of course, the team at Radio Algerienne El Bahdja (the band were heard by 8.5 million people during the course of their pre-gig live appearance in the studio!) Thanks also for the many kind comments emailed to the website from those who came to see the show (especially Beck and Rachid, etc.) Since the last diary entry, the band has been going flat out to meet its commitments. Great gigs have included Cwmbran Working Men's Band Club & Institute, Harwich Rugby Club, the 'Taste of Mersey' weekend at Bodelwydden Castle, as well as all the birthday parties and weddings that we've been fortunate enough to be asked to play at. Later this week we're off to Sheffield to play a gig on the roof of the City Hall (which is going to be filmed for TV) and on Saturday 11th June we're headlining the Penwortham Town Carnival at Hurst Grange Park (nr. Preston), so if you're in the area, maybe we'll see you there! (let's hope the weather holds!) Once again, a VERY BIG THANK YOU to everybody in Algiers for making us feel so at home and we look forward to seeing you all again in a few weeks time! Bye for now.
